Resistance to TherapyResistance to therapy is often blamed for the inability of AIDS therapy to affect 'surrogate markers', such as CD4 counts and viral load used to monitor the progress of therapy. Resistance is very difficult to accurately measure, but is a convenient scapegoat. Furthermore, even when therapy does affect surrogate markers in the hoped-for manner it doesn't necessarily result in better health (but that's a different issue).
